e621 AI Art Debacle (NSFW)

Post by miles »

Something funny happened on e621 recently I want to talk about. A true underdog story

Some background information first. e621, the furry porn archive, is pretty lax with the content it allows; as long as it's a piece of art that passes the (fairly lax) quality standards and contains some sort of non-human in it, it'll probably be approved. Infamously, they are one of the few furry sites that allow contentious content like cub.

However, AI generated and assisted imagery is categorized as a 'low quality' submission type that isn't allowed. AI art generators have gotten a lot better at making furries since thisfursonadoesnotexist.com, and people are generating images that are mostly coherent with minimal post-editing required. Inevitably, people are going to use AI tools and be dishonest about it, and one person who is doing this goes by Kemonymous.

This image was generated with NovelAI, but the uploader did not disclose this. After being confronted about it they claimed that only the background was AI generated, since that would explain the suspicious resolution of the image -- 512x768px is a default output resolution for NovelAI. This and other points were mentioned in the comments section on the e621 upload of the image.

The comment linked goes into detail about nearly every suspicious thing about this image, but one of their points in favor of the image is inaccurate: "AI generation shouldn't be able to generate an eevee." Going through the "Furry Diffusion" discord server, there are several examples of specific characters ( including several eevees) being made
with AI.

The next comment is from FishyVap, where they conveniently suggest that maybe it was only the background that was generated, a few hours before Kemonymous claims the same in the furaffinity upload. This will be relevant later.

Users FishyVap and abscondler defend the image's integrity in the comments, and go on to get into an argument with asfjkhkhjfsajaf about it. In a classic example of moving the goalposts, they refuse to acknowledge every point that keysmash brings up, instead picking at minor details. Eventually, the discussion ends, and keysmash gets accused of "botting" downvotes on absconder's posts.

Two days later, an admin drops in with a short comment at abscondler- "Project harder my dude". FishyVap is banned, and abscondler flusters about it, until they get banned as well. Looking at the mod feedback on their account it confirms that fishyvap and abscondler were the same person, as revealed by fishyvap posting a screenshot of a conversation in the e621 discord. Joining the discord requires an e621 account, and they can see what accounts joined the discord. FishyVap apparently was not in the discord, and this information (plus maybe IP logs or something) was enough proof that fishyvap and abscondler had to be the same person.

This was already pretty fun on its own, but looking into the banned accounts further raises some questions. Abscondler only has a handful of uploads, two of which are from an artist named Weblure, who was credited with making this guide to making a Slugcat with AI. On the fishyvap account, there are 2 drawings of a cat-bird character with no artist credited or source.

MORE TO COME LATER... I HAVE TO GO TO BED...
